Diane was scheduled for hip replacement surgery recently, and she sent me a little note saying she was looking at it as an opportunity for greater mindfulness.

One benefit of mindfulness is an increase in our ability to shift our perspective. I wrote recently about an inspiring group of women breast cancer survivorsdubbing themselves the “Golden Mammaries”who use the word “memory” as their cue to shift their minds in a new direction.
Whenever they hear the word “memory” they mentally replace it with “mammary” as in “I have happy mammaries of that time” or “Thanks for the mammaries.” It’s a seemingly silly way to take a word that has become loaded with images of pain, fear and anger and overlay it with new, happier connections.
It has a way of making you grin. Happy mammaries? Now, there’s a perky mental image! Think of a pair of smiley faces. How uplifting!
It works remarkably well. Connecting words that have acquired any kind of negative connotation with ones that are more benign (or vice versa) is a powerful way to develop greater linguistic intelligence while enhancing mindfulness.
Diane knows what’s hip. She’s an artist, remember. But “hip” now conjures memories of limping, pain, surgery, and worries about getting older.
Yikes.
So, I offered this mindfulness trigger as a healing hip tip for Diane:
Replace the word “hip” in your mind with the swingin’ version of hip. Picture yourself swaggering with confidence and non-stop style. When you think about having your hip bone replaced, consider it an infusion of panache and wild creativity! You are literally having your “hipness” replaced with a sparkling new version guaranteed to help you go, go, go for many years.
Well, Diane was delighted with this assignment, and looked forward to shifting her perspectiveand boosting her awarenessby switching to this hipper than hip definition.
You can do the same thing.
Pay attention to a word that makes you grimace, or one that sends a little ripple of despair through your body. It could be “weight” or “wife” or “deadline” or “money.” Choose to notice that word whenever you hear it, and watch the ways you respond to it.
Recognize and replace your personal angst-inducing word with one that creates a sense of calm and offers a blast of confidence and humor.
Get hip to the words that worry you, and start seeing them as welcome opportunities to swagger!

Sharing our bariatric stories is as personal decision as electing to have the surgery itself. Some of us are very private and others of us are very open. Overall I think we do the best we can on any given day. There are times when the moment is right to share and times when it is best to keep quiet. Here are a few things this bariatric zealot has learned the last few years:
It is well known that when a person affects a tremendous change in their life they often experience a great spirit of sharing and a desire to convert others to the new belief system. This is an altruistic desire to bestow upon others their wonderful new life. Think of converts to religious beliefs or former addicts graduating from recovery programs; often these people reach out enthusiastically to others who are as they once were. The recovering alcoholic is a champion of reform to the drunken and depressed. The born again believer is a champion to the sinners and downtrodden. So it is with the bariatric zealot, a champion to the fat and hopeless.
The desire to share our stories - to make converts to the bariatric persuasion - is sincere and well intentioned. But just like the recovered addict or the new believer, we must tread lightly when it comes to proselytizing this new wonderful way of life. First, we cannot assume that every obese person we meet is in a place where they wish to hear about our weight loss success. Second, it is quite easy to hurt someone’s feelings by suggesting weight loss surgery - it implies inferiority, even coming from a formerly obese person.
Think back to when you were overweight and hopeless. Didn’t you sometime feel betrayed by a former fatty gone thin? Chubby folks stick together and when one betrays the band to join the tiny tummy league the others can feel exposed and vulnerable. They can feel like failures because one of their members has succeeded where they have given up hope.
On the other hand, a bariatric patient is an inspiration for the heavyweight hopeless among us, a living breathing shrinking miracle overcoming the obstacle of obesity right before our very eyes. It is my experience that this metamorphosis is the greatest inspiration of all. Let the physical manifestation do your talking for you and tread lightly on tender feelings. We all share a great empathy for the obese and should never forget where we came from, even after the giant clothes have long been tossed on the garbage heap.
When asked about the wonderful transformation weight loss surgery has affected, the opportunity is ours to empathetically inspire others with hope. It is an opportunity to commiserate. Obesity is a lonely place to be. Sharing an intimate understanding of that loneliness will go far to ease another’s pain.

When you eat a carbohydrate by itself there is a sudden increase in sugar in the body. This causes the body to release insulin. However, the body releases too much insulin because it thinks more sugar is coming.
The insulin basically grabs the sugar/carbohydrate and stores it to fat for use at some other time. Since your body released too much insulin there is not enough sugar to support the brain function. That is why you feel tired or sluggish. So you’re fatter and dumber. So, if you are going to eat a carbohydrate, eat some protein with it, it will slow the release of the sugar.

A startling fact is that carbohydrates are not responsible for making people fat. Don’t feel too badly though, you are not the only person who was sold on the idea that a high protein, low carb diet was the only way to lose weight.
Here is a simple way to demonstrate this fact. Think about the vegetarians you know, are there any overweight problems among them? The high protein diets rely on a lot of animal fats and proteins, but these vegetarians don’t eat them. Startling indeed, isn’t it?
Maybe you don’t know any vegetarians. They certainly are hard to find, especially in the Midwest, where I live.
You may wonder about the science involved here. After all, many of those folks promoting the low carb diets are well educated, aren’t they? Being well educated doesn’t mean that you are infallible. Besides, the same science that supports the low carb diet also supports the high carb diet. They didn’t get it wrong, they just didn’t consider the whole story.
That might sound like a contradiction, but it isn’t. I’m going to explain why in just a moment. First, let me give you the science on this. You most likely are not a biochemist or a physiologist and neither am I. But I have studied the subjects a bit. Don’t focus on the technical jargon in the next paragraph,just try to grasp the overall point. You don’t need to be a scientist to use common sense and basic reasoning skills. Ready?
Consider this bit of biochemistry. Malonyl -CoA exists in high amounts when there is plenty of metabolic fuel present. Thus,carnitine acyltransferase is inhibited and this in turn prevents acyl-CoA from crossing into the cell’s mitochondria. Another enzyme is inhibited by the presence of NADH and Thiolase is also inhibited by the presence of Acetyl-COA. In short, when a lot of glucose is present, fatty acid metabolism is inhibited.
It is the last sentence that clues us in here. Basically, a cell will not convert fat into energy if there is glucose present. When the cell has carbs and sugar to work on, it will not convert the fat to energy, thus the fat gets stored.
This is why the low carb diets work, with little to zero carbohydrates and subsequently glucose to work on, the fat will be used for energy. This is exactly why the high carb diet works too. When no or little fat is present, it won’t be stored as fat.
In addition to this, it is important to realize that it costs the body quite a bit of energy to take carbs and store them as fat. This alone is actually a positive. There really needs to be some form of fat present to make it easier.
This should help you understand that whatever your diet consists of, if you want to remain or get thin, you need to avoid mixing fats and carbs together. A fat consists of a fatty acid head and a carbohydrate tail. This means when you mix your fats and carbs together you are asking for trouble, assuming you care about weight, that is.
So now it should be clear why so many people in North America have a weight problem as the NIH was happy to point out a few weeks ago. Think about the typical American diet. It generally consists of lots of combinations of fat and carbs.
As Dr. Neal Barnard points out in his book, “Foods That Cause You To Lose Weight”, It is fat that makes people fat.

Don’t want to be a vegetarian? I don’t blame you. Really, you don’t have to be one. Just quit mixing your proteins/fats and carbohydrates together.
Don’t overlook the obvious, there is ton of candy and desserts out there that are a mixture of fat and sugar. Meat and potatoes - perhaps this classic is a serious blunder in seperating fats and carbs. Armed with this knowledge,you can probably come up with dozens of examples of potentially fattening mixtures of food on your own.
